TOEFL(Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is an academic English language proficiency test administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service). It is used to assess the English language skills of non-native speakers who wish to study in an English-speaking university or college. The TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) is the most widely accepted version of the TOEFL and can be taken at home or at a test centre. At home testing requires a secure internet connection, webcam, microphone, and other equipment that must pass a ProctorU Equipment Check before the test begins. During the test, proctors are available to help with any technical issues that may arise. ETS also offers practice tests for the TOEFL iBT Test which allow students to experience what it's like to take the real TOEFL iBT test. These practice tests include authentic test questions and provide scores within 24 hours. ETS has also been selected by NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) for establishing PARAKH, India's first national assessment regulator, and stands in support of the AP African American Studies Course. ETS is committed to helping people around the world reach their potential through its assessments, learning solutions, and pioneering research.

TOEFL Registration process

The TOEFL registration process involves creating a profile on the ETS website, selecting a test centre and date, paying the registration fee, and confirming the application. Students can register for the TOEFL exam online through their ETS account, by phone, or by mail. It is recommended to register at least seven days before the test date or before 5 pm on the day before the test date. When registering for the TOEFL exam, students must provide personal information such as name, address, email address, and phone number. They will also need to select a test centre and date that is convenient for them. After selecting their preferred Test Date and Exam Center, candidates will be directed to an exam payment gateway page where they must pay a TOEFL registration fee of US $190. Once they have paid the fee and confirmed their application, they are ready to take the TOEFL exam.

TOEFL Test scoring

The TOEFL iBT test is scored on a scale of 0 to 120 points, with each of the four sections (Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing) receiving a scaled score from 0 to 30. The average TOEFL score is the 50th percentile, which is a total score of 84 on the iBT. After taking the test, a raw score is calculated for each section and then converted into a scaled score. The PBT TOEFL has a different scoring system with scores ranging from 310 to 677. Percentiles are also provided to show how an individual's score compares to other test takers' scores.

TOEFL Preparation tips

Preparing for the TOEFL exam requires dedication and practice. There are a number of tips and strategies that can help students prepare for the exam, such as familiarising oneself with the TOEFL format, researching TOEFL score requirements, learning academic English, using practice tests, and finding a reliable native English teacher who knows a lot about the TOEFL. Additionally, it is important to take care of oneself by getting enough rest before the test and staying calm, focused, and confident on test day. Other preparation tips include looking for evidence in TOEFL Reading passages by using high-quality passages and question sets, improving typing skills if taking the test online, practicing note-taking when reading and listening in one's spare time, developing one's own note-taking style to save time, and using FluentU to learn grammar and vocabulary while preparing for the exam. Overall, it is important to practise doing the tests as much as possible in order to be prepared for the exam.

TOEFL Score validity period

The TOEFL score is valid for two years after the test date. This means that if a person took the TOEFL on May 1st, 2022, their scores would be valid until May 1st, 2024. After this period, the scores will no longer be accessible and cannot be reinstated. This is in contrast to other tests such as the GRE and GMAT which have a validity period of five years. The short validity period of the TOEFL is due to it being a test of language proficiency, which can change over time. Therefore, it is important to plan when to take the test carefully in order to ensure that valid scores are available when applying for admission. There is also an option for a TOEFL score review up to 30 days after the test date.
